EP:002
2008

Phil Driver's excellent Soul Unsigned show on Solar Radio is a real must, and if you haven't tuned in then please do. I'm so pleased and proud, too, that Phil has taken the bold move to release these EPs, so bringing to our attention some very talented artists from around the world whom we would possibly never know about. This four-tracker works equally well as the first release, but I think it has the edge for being more organic if you see what I mean. We're talking real instruments and solid, toe-tapping grooves. I love all four tracks, and the first, “Tell Me”, is a good choice to kick off the CD. Moses Mayes were formed back in 1999 and have shared a stage in their native Canada alongside the likes of James Brown and Herbie Hancock! This rollicking groove with jazzy trumpet and a boogie-times rhythm will not disappoint. Fans of Incognito / Hill Street Soul will approve I am sure. Mothergroove, from Spain, are SUPERB! The funky, jazzy rhythms of “In 2 My Mind” are dizzying and when the male vocals kick in I am so drawn to make a comparison with Bobby Lyle's vocal style – check out “Good Inside” from the “New Warrior” album and you'll grasp what I mean.

Next stop is Germany's Candycream with the wonderfully infectious “Love What You Do”. This has a raw, unrefined feel – should this have been laid down in one take then I should not be at all surprised. Candycream is a nine-piece band with a love for '70s soul music, modern jazz, soul and lounge. Musically I am reminded slightly of Steve Harvey's earlier live works. They recently had the honour of supporting Lionel Richie on the German leg of his tour which must have been excellent. The last, but certainly by no means least, artist on here is Lisa Couto and Most People with Live And Breath”. From Rhode Island, this lovely Lady's vocal style reminds me of Australian beauty, Tina Arena. The keys on this song threatens to break into “Keep Rising To The Top”! You get the gist of the groove now! Its sumptuous and embracing – not unlike the cozy recordings of Big Brooklyn Red or Elizabeth Sheppard. This is highly recommended, and cheap as chips too – four tasty teasers of talents that may have otherwise slipped into the night unnoticed. Much respect to Phil and all concerned with Soul Unsigned.
